Scaffolding is an essential construction component, but it is extremely dangerous if constructed badly or used incorrectly. It is estimated that employers lose 90 million in lost workdays every year because they are not taking the necessary steps to protect workers on scaffolds and prevent injuries and deaths.
All organizations and employees working with scaffolding need to be aware of the importance of maintaining a safe and stable scaffold environment.
Before scaffolders undertake work at height, it is necessary for a risk assessment to be carried out. Based on the findings, a comprehensive method statement detailing both erection and striking of the scaffold must be prepared.
Scaffold contractors are required to provide a suitable stable working platform that has been erected by competent personnel. It is important that you have in place arrangements to ensure this and that these arrangements are reviewed regularly. Once erected it is a legal requirement that they undergo an inspection every seven days or following adverse weather conditions like high winds and flood.
Remember - Most accidents and incidents don't need to happen, with forethought, planning and monitoring, we can make sure they don't.
